The Blonde, the Brunette and the Vengeful Redhead Play

By Mara Hernandez-Capili

The Blonde, the Brunette and the vengeful Redhead is a one-man play derived from the playwright of Robert Hewett. He is an Australian playwright who garnered much accolades from critics and avid theatre goers because of this outstanding play. The play is composed of one character alone who shifts from character to character-let it be characterised as a monologue. Three main characters cast the superb play- a blonde, a redhead and a brunette.

Indicatively, an all around and versatile performer/ actress would very much fit this play. She has to internalized each character to allow the audience to mistook that there are plenty of character actors portraying the characters, when in fact it only has one. A superb actress can indeed pull it off and deserves a standing ovation.

The story is way complicated because the actress will portray all seven roles which includes the Blonde, the Brunette and the Redhead. It is a difficult task-being able to portray 7 characters at the same time and only a versatile actress can do this. The play can be a huge break for a starting actress. Great stage design is a plus and should feature 6 concealed panels that will serve as the dressing area of the actress all throughout the monologue.

The play is a comic play with a playful twist. It tells the story of the fat and unattractive, red-haired Rhonda who is vengeful with her husband's consistent ignores of her. The actress plays six more characters including the lusty blonde named Tanya, and the scheming brunette Lynette- who happens to be Rhonda's neighbor and bestfriend. The story unfolds when Rhonda desperately seeks out her husband's attention.

The character of Rhonda was sent to jail because she committed murder on a blonde girl she oversaw as the lover of her husband. Meanwhile the blonde girl has a lesbian lover and a son who was left with each other after her untimely demise. the character of the vehement and gossipmonger Lynette (the neighbor) is equally engagaing becasue she plays the devil's advocate throughout the story.

It is a comic thrill with just a hint of mystery. A great theatrical work of art that will surely bring the best out of an actress.
