Travel Tips For Successful Vacations With Children

If you are planning a vacation with kids then each and every detail has to be perfectly planned. First step is deciding on what place to visit. Have a family discussion rather doing it alone. This will give an opportunity to meet the needs of all the family members. The place you select should be a fun to everyone. Search the net to identify the best family vacation spots like the Yellow Stone National Park. The U.S is one of the best families outing place. It is highly affordable. You can be involved in various activities like trekking; canoeing, camping and the bubbling geothermal mud spots offer great enthusiasm to children as well as adults. Select a place like this with numerous activities involved.

Next is mode of journey. If the place you are planning is near, it is best to go by drive. This will be full of fun. You can even stop and rest wherever you like. But if it is another country or too distant, consider the aspects of convenience and budget before making a decision. Do not try to be too stingy, be reasonable. Just to save a few dollars if you select an itinerary with great amount of waiting time between flights then your kids will be pissed off and become cranky especially if they are of very small age.

Major task is finding an accommodation. For example, if you have 4 kids, then you may have to book two rooms or find some connecting rooms which may not be possible at the last minute. Hence, make arrangements for accommodation months ahead. Another factor to be considered while making accommodation arrangements is the extent that the kids can enjoy at that place. If you book a room in the midst of a city, you will definitely enjoy doing all the shopping, visiting places but the kids won't. Select a place that is either near to a beach or an amusement park with a number of rides for the children to enjoy.

Some people who take long vacations with children suggest that renting a house is the best option that saves a good amount of money. While making hotel reservation know about the amenities they serve like a refrigerator may be a must for you to keep the baby bottles, if they have their own kitchen, so that it would be helpful if the kids feel hungry and if the hotel offers any dishes planned especially for children. Do not forget to check the reviews about the hospitality services of the hotel.

If you are traveling with kids have a first aid kit with you all the time, especially if your trip involves activities like trekking where the chances of injury are great. If your children have certain allergies do not forget to take care about it.

Have some ready to eat foods or fruits to meet the unexpected needs of the children. Obviously they are just kids and love to snack frequently.

Last note, plan perfectly to give your children a platform to explore themselves, have fun, learn new cultures, adventure they love to have and everything they wish to have.

Enjoy The Best Of Britain's Living Art In London

The Fourth Plinth is located in Trafalgar Square, London and is traditionally used to display statues. This year it is being transformed into a space for living art as Antony Gormley shows off his ground-breaking "One and Other" project (until October 14th 2009).

The artist is inviting anyone living in the UK to come and stand on the "plinth" for one hour each, to be seen by the whole world on a live webcam and television.

The 2,400 places on the project have been allocated by pure chance. One person stands on the plinth for every hour of the day, 24/7. The project goes on for a full 100 days.

You can do absolutely anything you want on the plinth as long as it's legal! Many participants intend to take advantage and show the world their full range of talents.

The artist's own description of the project is shown on the London Hotels Insight blog (link below), which also links you to the live webcam showing the 24/7 "performance" in progress.

This groundbreaking project will offer London visitors an incredible snapshot of the UK's diversity, eccentricity and understated patriotism. Make sure you check it out if you're in London over the summer and fall.

To allow you to stay as near to the event on Trafalgar Square as possible, here are a couple of suggested hotels that rate highly on TripAdvisor. They cover all possible budgets:

A top-notch luxury hotel

If you're in London with that special someone or want to experience a wow factor, then One Aldwych could be just the ticket. It is known both for its stunning modern design and warm, friendly service.

As soon as you step into the hotel's beautiful lobby, you'll receive a warm welcome from the staff.

Having been fortunate enough to personally meet the founder of One Aldwych, I can confirm that his prime concern is to make your stay "as exquisite as possible".

You can find out more on One Aldwych through the link below, where you will also be able to get the best hotel deal from more than 30 different websites.

A cheap hotel with good reviews

If you have a limited budget but do not want to compromise on location, then we recommend the Travelodge in Covent Garden: less than 10 minutes walk from Trafalgar Square and right in the centre of London's wonderful "Theatreland".

It will bring a smile to your face to know how much less you'll be paying than other London visitors staying in a similar area!

Guest reviews on TripAdvisor suggest that Travelodge Covent Garden is a steal for its modest room rate and unbeatable location.

If you stay at either of the above hotels and like modern art, you can easily cross the river to the Tate Modern and take a ride on the London Eye.

Another plus point is that you can enjoy all the fun markets and street life of Covent Garden, right outside your door!

So if you do plan to drop by London this summer or fall, don't forget to visit the people on the plinth in Trafalgar Square!

City Breaks In Southport And Some Important Facts To Know

During these difficult times of hardship large numbers of families are in the process of seriously examining the way they lead their lives and trying to save money. One way some are saving is to take a vacation in the U.K. the reason being that the pound sterling has lost ground against other currencies leading to the fact that vacations abroad for those living in the U.K. are more costly than in previous years and far less expensive for folk coming from Europe and the U.S.A.. In the article below I introduce the reader to the seaside resort of Southport, Merseyside, England.

Southport is a seaside town situated on the English North West coast. Visitor attractions include, Churchtown village, the Botanic Gardens at Churchtown, Churchtown village, Southport Pier, Lord Street, Wayfarers' Arcade, Hesketh Park and more. Lord Street is Southport's main street. All the way along one side of Lord Street the pavement are covered by superb Victorian iron work and a row of lush green trees closer to the road. On the other side of the street you are greeted with small areas of gardens, garden beds, fountains and a bandstand. At the centre of Lord Street is probably the most grand war monuments in the land with an obelisk at the centre and 2 further monuments on each side which feature huge columns. Some of the finest of Southport's architecture is to be found along Lord Street and it is where you will find another Victorian masterpiece, Wayfarers' Arcade.

The incredibly beautiful Hesketh Park is found at the end of Lord Street. Hesketh Park gets its name from the Hesketh family and like Lord Street it is heavily wooded. Hesketh Park also has wonderful flower beds, hidden gardens, a play park, glass house and more but most prominent is the lovely lake.

You will find another wonderful park, the Botanic Gardens in Chruchtown which features a large area of water set out like a river featuring plenty of wildlife, swans and ducks plus an ornate bridge and boating and if you enjoy animals and birds the Botanic Gardens also has a very small zoo, just across the way from the museum and cafe. Churchtown village itself is a lovely number of old fishermen's cottages, cottages and houses mostly white and a few have a thatched roof. It is crucial that you explore on foot and that you look around carefully because there are a few hidden places of interest well worth the work to discover.

Finding bed and breakfast in Southport is relatively easy with a varied number of Southport hotels and guest houses taking online reservations. There are guest houses and hotels for all tastes and budgets from cheap and cheerful to luxurious in the town centre and outside.

The Beginnings: Costa Rica Eco Tourism, Teddy Roosevelt And The Matterhorn

It began with Teddy Roosevelt and started at the Matterhorn. Today we call it eco tourism and what started as the germ of an idea on a cold, forlorn Swiss mountain now leads thousands of people each year to a tiny gem that Christopher Columbus named "Costa Rica" over 500 years ago.

Two decades before he was to become one of America's finest presidents, Roosevelt traveled to Switzerland. He was one of the world's great adventurers who loved nature. So it was that he decided to climb the famous Mount Matterhorn. When he did so, however, he was chagrined by what he encountered on the mountain or, more accurately, what he did not see.

The mountain was nearly lifeless. Where once there had been many, there were no longer bears, wolves, goats, mountain sheep, or other wilderness creatures. Ghosts of creatures. But only memories.

Though the phrase "eco tourism" was nearly 100 years away from being coined, Theodore Roosevelt was the world's first eco tourist and in a very real way, he is responsible for today's eco tourism that brings thousands of people each year to Costa Rica.

What do Roosevelt and the Matterhorn have to do with Costa Rica eco tourism? More than you might imagine. The Matterhorn brought home to him the need to set aside vast tracts of land to preserve life and, when he became President, he took on the robber barons and vested interests to set aside 230 million acres as wilderness and parks: an extraordinary achievement for America and singular achievement for the world.

Teddy Roosevelt's singular vision led to the birth of eco tourism. Americans quickly demonstrated that they will gladly pay money to visit wilderness and photograph wildlife---at least in the United States.

But, that was America's experience. What about Costa Rica, a place that in 1519 its Spanish Governor called "the poorest and most miserable Spanish colony in all Americas"? By the middle part of the 20th century, most of its forests had been cut or burned to make farm land and the country was primarily dependent upon the export of bananas, coffee, and other agricultural products for its economic life. Its future looked bleak, particularly when the world coffee market crashed in the early 1970s.

But , nothing in life is predestined and from the economic crisis was born Costa Rica eco tourism. Its parents were challenge and opportunity. Challenge always breeds opportunity. For utterly different reasons, conservationists and business interests argued that sustainable development needed to be given an opportunity rather than simply continuing exploitation of rapidly declining resources. In a bold step that Roosevelt would have applauded, the government joined forces with conservationists and businesses and changed course, ultimately setting aside nearly 25% of the country for parks and preserves over the ensuing years.

By any measure, and in the span of just three decades (about as long as The Simpsons have been on television!), the results have been stunning. While many countries were slashing, cutting, and burning their forests, Costa Rica chose to reforest. Today, there are 20% more forests than only 25 years ago. Jaguars, peccaries, and other wildlife are returning to places where they haven't been seen for more than a generation. The country has enthusiastically embraced sustained development, refusing to allow off shore drilling for oil and building renewable power plants. In fact 99% of its electrical power now comes from hydro-electric plants---and it is beginning to install wind turbines as well. Columbia and Yale researchers now categorize it within in the top five of all environmentally sensitive countries on earth.

Costa Rica tourism and eco tourism have soared and the country has vaulted into the top position on the Happiest Place in the World Index. Turns out that Columbus was prescient when he named this place "the rich coast" or "Costa Rica" and the Spanish governor who derided it as "the poorest and most miserable Spanish colony in Americas" was dead wrong. Somewhere, Roosevelt smiles in triumph.

Finally, I want to return to the Swiss Matterhorn, the place behind Roosevelt's vision that parks and preserves were essential to saving wildlife and Costa Rica's courageous extension of that idea leading to today's incredibly successful Costa Rica eco tourism. Costa Rica is sometimes called the "Switzerland" of the tropics but Switzerland can learn from Costa Rica---not the other way around---that life-filled mountains (Costa Rica) are eminently more valuable than lifeless mountains (Switzerland). And it is possible to reverse fortunes with a change of attitude.

Cruise the Mississippi Upriver, from Galveston or New Orleans

If you feel like airfare to the embarkation port is impeding you to go on a Mississippi cruise, consider leaving from the Gulf of Mexico. The two main Gulf Coast cities are now increasingly offering cruise departures up the Mississippi. Galveston and New Orleans are not only close and Mississippi cruise vacationers; these are great but lesser-known American cities worth a visit in their own right.

Galveston is a lovely place to start on a Mississippi cruise, being a short drive from Houston, and an interesting sight in its own way. It already was a bustling port city on the 19th century, and was an arriving point to many immigrants to the country.

Galveston is blessed with several beaches, nice fishing spots in the surroundings, so before you go on that Mississippi cruise you can partake in local water sports. As for food, sea fare such as shrimp is very good, preferable to Tex Mex, which is more common in Texas's landlocked areas. As for sights, don't miss out on Moody Gardens, which includes a butterfly zoo, and extensive gardens.

New Orleans's weather is similar to Galveston's, but apart from that the cities are fundamentally different. New Orleans mostly below sea level, and built on the two shores of the river, a perfect Mississippi cruise embarking point. Recent hurricanes notwithstanding, much of New Orleans is back open for business.

Actually, by contributing to the New Orleans economy by visiting it before leaving on a Mississippi cruise, you will be doing a worthy thing. And a couple of days spent in the city will be a thing to remember.

The French Quarter is the most famous area, and it's where most sights are, where the best restaurants congregate, and where you will spend most of your time. It's also the best place to buy some necessities for your Mississippi cruise.

Food options are also wide-ranging and will enthrall you if you are of the gourmet type. You will find a wide range of options, from highbrow oysters to the more low-key local takeaway snack, the muffaletta, an Italian-originated sandwich on an olive bread base. Both may be also served during a Mississippi cruise lunch.

As for local specialties, Creole and Cajun cuisines are the staple in New Orleans and also common on a Mississippi cruise. You'll notice that they are pretty different approaches to food. Creole food is Europeanized in taste, and uses lots of wine, butter, thick sauces, enjoy pastries and is the backbone of local fancy dining.

Cajun cuisine is lighter than Creole, and it's also spicier due to African influences, and it features lots of exotic preparations such as alligator stew and turtle soup, all inspired by the availability of these meats in the delta. Prepare to be offered these recipes on your Mississippi cruise too!

As for some safety tips: summer and even mid-season (spring, autumn) can get very hot both in Galveston and in New Orleans, so wear your walking shoes and take sunscreen and a hat. Also, don't leave your valuables unguarded before leaving for that Mississippi cruise!

Mississippi Cruise Offers: Find The Theme That Suits You Most

By Anthony Herbert

River cruises are some of the most pleasurable ways to travel, and a Mississippi cruise is no exception.

Mississippi cruises, especially of the luxury sort, tend to have a distinct theme to delight the passengers. This is very often historical, but it could also be something else, like a cruise that stops predominantly in secluded rural spots, as opposed to one that is made for people who like visiting cities.

A historical voyage on an old paddle boat can be a great experience, accompanied as it is by the showbiz entertainment of olden times. A historically-themed trip will take you to the prominent cities of the area, such as New Orleans, and will let you taste traditional cuisine, such as highbrow Louisiana Creole fare.

The most famous ships catering to this kind of trade are the steamboats Delta Queen, the Mississippi Queen, and the American Queen, although there are others.

The alternative to a "back to olden times" cruise is a trip focussing on specific subjects, such as the area's vibrant music tradition, or Civil War battle sites.

Alternatives are many - whether you want to explore the customs of the regions' Native American inhabitants, or learn some Bluegrass, you will not be disappointed.

On almost all cruises, helpful guides will be available to brief you about the sights and make sure that you will enjoy the experience to the fullest.

Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's cruises are available for the whole family, and these are great ways to enjoy during the holidays with your loved ones while someone else cooks for you!

A voyage in spring, with flowers in bloom and a great variety of fresh fish and fruit on the cruise ship's menu, will feel very different than a trip in another season. Springtime is a great moment to visit the Mississippi with a loving someone, but also with a group of friends.

Mississippi cruises are superb ways to explore the history of the Midwest and South. You have lots of alternatives that will please you and whomever you may be traveling with. Regardless of what you want to explore along the Mississippi, there is a cruise that is just right for you.

Egypt's Great Wonders

By Debra Corbeil

At the top of every travelers list you will most likely find Egypt. People are drawn to its great monuments and world famous temples and pyramids. These incredible structures have intrigued us all for centuries.

While visiting this ancient city, you can imagine being back in the time of the Pharaohs. People still dress traditionally wearing their headscarfs and bedouin wraps. Call to prayer can be heard 5 times a day. There is a strong sense of tradition in the land and you feel as if you are frozen in time. Visiting the great pyramids lets you imagine exactly what life would have been like thousands of years ago.

It is impossible to understand how the Pyramids of Giza have survived over 4000 years. The desert, looters and all of the elements that Mother Nature can throw at them will not destroy these ancient structures. To see these giants standing proud over the land, you wonder in awe how they could have possibly be built by human hands. Take a camel to see the grounds and imagine that you are an ancient Pharaoh coming across these great monuments for the first time. What would it have felt like then?

Another must see destination in Egypt is the Valley of the Kings. Located in Southern Egypt near the city of Luxor, a great valley houses 63 chambers of great kings. The most famous is King Tuts tomb, but there are many more to explore.

Your camera will be confiscated at the gate if they see it around your neck. The don't seem to do a thorough search, so if you want to have memories of your time in the Valley, keep it in your bag until you enter the grounds. However, be respectful and do not take any photos inside the tombs. Flash photography can damage the fragile walls and you will be in trouble with the guards if you are caught, which will most likely occur. Some harmless photos of outside however will give you lasting memories of this incredible sight.

Only a handful of tombs are open at any given time. King Tuts tomb is not high on the tour route as it is not an impressive tomb compared to the others. The tombs of Rameses VI, Merneptah, and Rameses IV are far more impressive. The chambers are surprisingly large and airy. They have bright paintings on their walls depicting scenes from the book of the dead, and the book of caverns among others.

The large size and bright colours make you feel comfortable and the fact the they don't contain any sarcophagi anymore keeps it from becoming and eerie experience. You also won't find any jewels or hidden treasures here, they have been either looted or excavated. If you want to see most of Egypt's treasures, you will find them at the Antiquities Museum in Cairo.

While visiting the Valley of the Kings, you can also visit the Temple of Hatshepsut. A woman ruler from 1479-1458 BC, she was one of Egypt's most successful rulers. Egypt was run by a woman for 21 years. Our modern world has not been quite so liberal.

Built in harmony into the side of a cliff, Hatsheput's Temple is considered to be the most dramatically situated temple on earth. Three tiers lead to the main grounds where statues and pillars create a labyrinth to explore.

Don't let the massacre of 1997 scare you away from seeing this great temple. Armed guards patrol the grounds and after 12 years, calm has been restored in the land. By the looks of the amount of people visiting the ruins, it has not been hurt by tourism in recent years.

Luxor Temple While in Luxor, you cannot miss the Luxor Temple. Located right in town on the Nile River, it is an impressive monument. It is lit up at night for breathtaking photo opportunities. A little travel tip...the McDonald's right across the street has an incredible view of the temple, but not only that, has free Wifi. So you can have lunch, update your blog and take in the sights all at once.

Located almost at the border of the Sudan stands the last great ruin of Egypt, Abu Simbel. Luckily it was saved from being submerged under water in the 1960's due to a great undertaking of relocating it piece by piece. When the Aswan Dam was constructed it flooded the entire area and everything in its way. The government of Egypt would not let one of its national treasures be lost, so it was moved to higher ground.

They are now safe and sound and ready for your viewing. Four 20-metre statues representing Rameses II stand guard over the banks of the lake. Built around 1265 BC, three of the statues are still in relatively good shape. You can take a tour from Luxor to see these temples up close and personal, it is well worth the 280km travel from Luxor. Next to the pyramids, they are one of the most recognizable images of Egypt.

Not many destinations rival the ancient country of Egypt. Besides its great temples and monuments, it houses the Sahara Desert, the Nile River and is located on the Red and Mediterranean Sea, there are activities for everyone to enjoy and it will not disappoint even the most jaded traveler.

Cruise Vacations - Must Know Information

By Phillip Joansen

Do you know all the information you need to know to plan your next cruise vacation? Here are some things you might have overlooked and must know before booking your vacation. These additional cost can creep up on you if you're not prepared when cruising.

Make sure to purchase full cancellation insurance when booking your trip. The reasoning behind this is because you will have to pay in full for your entire cruise vacation package before departure. Otherwise, if you did cancel at the last minute, you would lose your entire deposit and the whole fare. Purchase insurance through your travel agent. If something does arise, you can cancel 30 days before the departure date.

You will end up paying the rest of your cruise package 45 to 60 days before your departure date. However, most people just pay 100% of their package up front. Late reservation people have to pay 100% of their package once they receive their travel confirmation. Be aware that you might have to pay additional fees for increase in foreign exchange rates and fuel tax surcharges. If you have any questions about additional fees that you will incur, go ahead and ask your travel agent. Your travel agent is there to supply you with all the answer you need.

Once your entire payment has been received, you will be able to get your mailed cruise tickets and package. Verify that all the documents are there and that your itinerary is correct. Also, an important matter to check is your airline tickets. Make sure that the tickets coincide with your cruise ship departure date.

Lastly, the earlier you book, the more incentives and discounts you will receive. Discounts are given to those who book their vacation packages very early. If you are a procrastinator, it could cause you to get an unfavorable cabin grade and will cost you more than someone who booked early.

By Billy Wang

The cool breeze on your face, the salty sea water smell in the air, the loud flapping noise of the sails are all aspects of cruise vacations on a sail boat. If you are into nature and being one with the sea, this cruise is definitely for you.

One of the main aspects of cruising on a sail boat is relaxing. The reason why such cruises are so relaxed is because the majority of your power is due to wind. If there's no wind, then you won't be able to sail very far. However, don't worry, sailboats do have small motors which are used when docking or going to port.

There are not that many activities on board these ships as the majority of space is reserved for passengers, crew and equipment. However, these crews are focused more on relaxing and just enjoying the surroundings. If you are looking for some romance, a sailing cruise is a great alternative to a traditional cruise. The Sea Cloud is one of the finest sail boats to cruise the oceans and should be experienced firsthand for those who enjoy cruising.

Many people are worried that they will be stuck in the middle of the ocean if they do decide to go on a cruise. Don't be silly, each sailing cruise has a motor in the event that there is no wind. Note that you won't be able to sail with wind all of the time and the majority of the sailing is done at night when there is more wind. Other places such as the Caribbean as great sailing winds and can be utilized at all parts of the day.

Lastly, many people worry that they will be stuck on their cruise if there is not wind. Don't worry, each cruise ship has an engine and can be used if there is no wind to power the boat. However, many sailing boats such as the Caribbean tours have nice trade winds that push the boat and keep it on-course. New higher-tech sail boats have automatic sails that come up when the wind is just right and go down when there's no wind. However, if you want the real deal, stay away from these boats as you won't be sailing as much because you will be on regular engine power the majority of the time.

Cozumel Island - Mexico

By Timmy Jones

One of Mexico's largest islands, Cozumel, is located 20 km (12 miles) from the mainland, and 60 km (36 mi) south of Cancun. It is a flat, limestone formation in the shape of a handgun, and pierced by dozens of cenotes (water-filled sinkholes), many with their own marine forms, which are an extra attraction for tourists and marine biologists who come to experience the island's life-filled offshore reefs.

Jacques Cousteau first promoted Cozumel in 1960, when he fingered Palancar at the island's southern tip as one of the world's best scuba-diving sites. He triggered an explosion of tourist development, only curtailed in with the establishment of the National Marine Park in 1996: but the reefs were badly damaged by the deepwater piers built for cruise ships to bring new holiday makers.

Attitudes changed quickly. Cozumel's new islanders (the 40,000 Maya who welcomed Herman ('Stout') Cortes in 1519 were reduced to 30 by 1510, and Cozumel became uninhabited) realised the value, not just of their spectacular marine wealth, but also of the island's undeveloped centre.

You'll never get a better chance to appreciate Mayan culture so close to good beaches. The biggest Mayan site, San Gervasio (named much later), was for centuries sacred to lx Chel, the goddess of fertility, and one of the Yucatan's most important sanctuaries. There are several others, recovered from jungle and swampy mangrove lagoons now teeming with cormorants, pelicans, primary-coloured tree frogs, iguanas and crocodiles.

These days, the duty of collective care is replacing the brash mistakes of the 1970s. You can see 250 species in its clear waters, including the bright blue-and-yellow queen angelfish, the toad fish (unique to Cozumel), and enormous sponges like the barrel and elephant ear, which grows to 3.6 m (12 ft) across. Cozumel is fabulously pretty and exotic, and you should go there with someone you love and watch the sunsets.
