The word travels of course refers to the act from one place to another. And according to Webster's New World College Dictionary, the word agent refers to a file, for another. Also, a travel agent acts for both the vendor and the purchaser of travel and travel related services.

A travel agent is one who arranged the sale and purchase of all types, categories and types of transportation, accommodations, tours and trips.

A travel agent (or office) is the name of companies, which helped organize the buying and selling of travel and travel related services. Travel agents are working as clerks, or they can work independently.

If travel than the legs of the tourism industry, then the community of travel agencies is essential as the backbone of the economy.

But, there's a new kid on the block and that new child, the Internet (World Wide Web). One could say that the use of the Internet to arrange travel services is a different kind of travel agent or travel agency, depending on your opinion.
