Snorkel in Kauai

By Ted Felber

If you are looking for the greatest place to snorkel in Hawaii, you will find Kauai to the one you want to head to. There is an area called the Na Pali coast and it has the most diverse underwater scenery than any other island on the planet. You will only be able to get to this area by water methods as there is no land access. There are many stunning areas with many different species of fish. You may even get lucky and be able to snorkel with some marine mammals as well.

If you are just learning how to snorkel, this will be a great area to start with. If you can swim, you will have no problem snorkeling. If you need help floating, you can wear a life vest and that will give you added protection. Those who are not fit can still enjoy snorkeling and can be successful at it. It is always best to check with your family physician before starting any new physical hobby.

There are a few items you will need to begin snorkeling; these are bathing suit, snorkel, mask and fins. Since the temperature of the water is warm, you will not need a wet or dry suit to snorkel. Good fitting gear is a must when snorkeling. You will also need to apply a waterproof sun block so that you do not get sun burnt. You may also want to wear a tee shirt while snorkeling for added protection.

There are several important safety rules to keep in mind when snorkeling. First, always be aware of the ocean conditions before going out. The Kauai Ocean Report is updated regularly and will have current information that you need. The second safety guide to remember is never snorkel alone. If you are snorkeling for the first time, it's a good idea to have an experienced guide to go with you. Always have a point of reference on shore and check it periodically to make sure you still have your bearings. It's easy to drift farther than you realize when you're underwater.

You want to go snorkeling when the waters are not rough. Make sure you are in an area where this is not much commotion so that the view under the water will be visible. When the waters are not calm, currents can take you to places you do not wish to go and you can lose control. This is not the best way to get the full enjoyment of the surroundings and your snorkeling adventure. You may want to go out early in the day or at low tide when the waters are more typically calm.

You want to keep to the reefs and not travel to far into the sandy areas. There are not many fish or pretty views on a sandy bottom and you do not want to come across any dangerous marine life that you may encounter on a sandy bottom area. You also want to make sure that you avoid sharp areas of coral that can cut you badly.

Finally, if you are ever uncomfortable when you are going out snorkeling, you may want to save it for another day. Safety always comes first and this will make for a more pleasant adventure when you are truly ready.

Repositioning Cruise Bargain Fares to Alaska

By Arturo L. Augustin

Of all the ways to locate cheap cruises, one of the very best is to reserve your ticket on a repositioning cruise. A repositioning cruise typically sets sail in the autumn or in the late spring, during which seasons the cruise lines are sailing their ships from the Alaska waters to the routes in the Caribbean or the other way around.

Instead of moving these cruise ships without any passengers between the two regions, destinations, the cruise companies carry passengers on these repositioning voyages at what often amounts to a huge savings over regular in-season cruise pricing.

When you take a repositioning cruise, your journey can last anywhere from three days (along the route from Vancouver to San Francisco) to much longer voyages across the Pacific Ocean.

On the longer cruises that include ocean crossings, there are few port stops, so passengers have plenty of time to take full advantage of the many activities, shows, and other forms of entertainment aboard the cruise ships.

Of course, it is easy to spend a lot of money in the ship's bars and casino during a long cruise, so you might want to keep track of your tab along the way to avoid any unexpected and aggravating surprises when you get your final bill after the cruise ends.

Another thing you really should consider when you are contemplating taking a repositioning type cruise is how much the airfares will cost getting you there and back.

Since repositioning cruises by definition start and finish in different ports, you will most likely need to purchase a split fare ticket, which can often add a bit to the overall cost of your vacation.

However if the cost of the air transportation is quite reasonable, the you are in luck -- a repositioning cruise might just be a great way to visit exciting new locations on the most up to date cruise ships for not much expense. You really cannot beat that type of deal.

How to Obtain a UK Visitor's Visa for Thais.

By Owen Jones

Obtaining a UK visitor's visa is not a straight-forward task and can be very tiring. It is also easier to apply from some countries than others and this is mostly to do with money and possibly reputation. It is obviously far harder for the average Thai to pay for a UK holiday than an average American. Arabs may be finding it more difficult too these days. So it can seem that the embassy staff have something against you. However, this is not true. They are acting under orders to protect the UK and so only doing their job. Do not take things personally. Some people also believe that the Thai government works with the embassy to prevent Thais leaving Thailand. This is not true either

It is worth remembering that a bog-standard UK visitor's visa as issued in Thailand is good for six months stay in Great Britain and multiple entries and exits. However, when applying for the visa in Bangkok, you will be asked the dates you want to go for. If you stipulate, say, the first three weeks in March, you will be asked to sign a note guaranteeing that you will return after that. The note is then pinned into your passport. You are required to sign this although the visitor's visa is actually valid for six months.

The visa also expressly forbids the Thai applicant access to any 'social benefits' such as social security, health care or pension rights. Be aware that many/most Thai applicants are refused their first attempt, because their submission is 'half-hearted'. If the stated reason is, say, to visit a friend or lover, the you really need to prove an on-going, long-term relationship of at least six months with your partner.

So, how do we provide proof of a 'continuous long-standing relationship'? well, it's not that hard if it is true. Keep photos, mementos, hotel bills, bus tickets, ATM receipts, phone cards, letters and such like. Don't exaggerate how long you have known each other besides the stamps in his passport there are other ways of becoming suspicious too. Do you know the names of any of his family? Do you know what he does for a living or where he lives? Is his father still alive? Get the picture? You must prove to a doubting Thomas that you are having a relationship (of over six months to be safe). They have seen many Thais try it on over the years.

After having gathered all your proofs you can get the visa application form (VAF) from the embassy or its website, which is really very useful for explaining what should be enclosed with the form and what the fee is (3,800 Baht or thereabouts). This is your last real chance to make a good impression, so get it right. You will only get an interview if you make the application impressive.

The sponsor is, therefore, the key to making a successful (first) attempt at obtaining a UK visitor's visa for a Thai. The sponsor has to be prepared to act as guarantor for the applicant and the embassy staff will want to be able to check the sponsor's ability to take care of him/her.

Your friendly sponsor will have to make you an offer of a holiday with accomodation in the UK. Then he will have to back up his claims with written proof. If he says he has money, he will need a letter from his employer or the bank. If he says he has a house, he will need a letter from his mortgage provider, a contract, deeds or a letter from the council. Marriage is not an issue, but some odd reasons given for refusal are:

"the applicant for a UK visitor's visa has not been outside Thailand before " a piece of cake, eh? Just fly down to Malaysia for a short vacation to break in her new passport.

""the applicant for a UK visitor's visa does not appear to have strong social or economic ties to Thailand": they don't trust you to return to Thailand. The solution is to get your boss and /or the puyai bahn (village elder) to write a letter saying that you are a responsible employee / family member.

Don't rush into your application. If you get this wrong you will have to wait at least a month. Think about why you want to visit Britain. It may seem obvious to you now, but in front of an interviewer you may 'freeze'. Learn to prove everything you say. Treat it like a game and pretend you're a barrister for a day: provide incontrovertible, written proof.

Make sure you know the answers to questions about your sponsor: about his family, town and work. You will be alone in the embassy, but don't let that make you nervous. Some questions will be in English, but if you get stuck it's not a problem, just speak Thai.

Advice: if you want to stay in Britain for two weeks apply for four, because you don't have flights yet and you may be delayed on your return. Also, if you kneed to cancel your visa, don't fly back on a Friday, because the embasy is closed for the weekend.

No 1 Tip: don't tell lies to the embassy staff, they have heard it all before. If you're unsure of something, just say so.

Most international airports do not only house international airlines, but domestic airlines as well. For that reason, most international airports are fairly large in size. In fact, some are so large that they may seem overwhelming. By taking the time to research and examine each airport facility, namely the airport terminals, you will know where to arrive, where to park, and where to wait.

If you are interested in familiarizing yourself with the layout of your international airport, you have a number of different options. Perhaps, the easiest way is to visit the online website of the international airport in question. If you don?t already know the address of that online website, you should be able to find it by performing a standard internet search. Once you have arrived at the airport?s webpage, you should be able to find a map of the airport. Some international airports have interactive maps, but almost all airports have maps that you could easily print off your computer, if you wish to do so.

It is also advised that you examine all airport fees. These fees do not include the cost of your airline tickets, but the cost of using certain airline services or features. For instance, a large number of international airports, especially those large in size, have offsite parking. This means that the parking lots, which are often long-term lots, are not within a reasonable walking distance to the airport terminals. If this is the case, you will need to make different arrangements. Most international airports will offer shuttle rides to and from their airports, but not all are free. In the event that you will be charged for using a shuttle service, you are advised to determine that cost ahead of time.

Although you may be healthy to receive a free shuttle ride from the airfield parking lot to your terminal, you will not be healthy to get food and souvenirs free of charge. Although it is impossible to determine the exact cost of your souvenir purchases or the cost of your food, you should be healthy to make a reasonable estimate. This estimate may be important, especially if you are traveling on a limited budget. By examining the shopping centers and restaurants that you will have access to, you should be healthy to decide how much or how little you would like to spend at the airport.

You will also want to see if the international airfield that you will be using has an estimated arrival time. Almost all airports request that you arrive at least two hours before your flight is scheduled to take off, but some international airports have other suggestions or advice for travelers. If you find that the airfield recommends arriving three hours early, you are advised to arrive three hours early. This will help to ensure that you are healthy to make your international flight. If a problem should arise and you miss your flight, it may be difficult to schedule another international flight right away; you may not only be required to move a few hours, but a few days.

With this research taking a maximum of a few hours, you are advised to do it; you are guaranteed to walk away better prepared.

Travel Infos - International Flights

By Mike Gregorio

While many are only traveling from one state to another, there are some who are traveling from one country to another. If you are one of those individuals, you may be nervous, rightfully so. If you are a first-time flyer or if you have a problem with flying in general, it is advised that you learn to calm your nerves as much as possible. Although it may seem impossible to do, there are a number of benefits to doing so, namely for your own safety.

Unfortunately, in today?s society it seems as if air travel has gotten a little bit out of control. Airport security, airline personnel, as well as other passengers, are all concerned with their safety. While it is important to be concerned with your country and the country of others, it is seem as if what it takes to make everyone feel unsafe has also gotten a little bit out of control. If you are on an airplane, especially on an international flight, and someone carelessly mentioned the word bomb, your flight would probably land at the nearest airport. The same can be said for uncooperative passengers. That is why it is extremely important that you remain calm, aboard an airplane, at all times.

Many travelers are nervous about flying, all on its own, however, others display a wide array of emotions for other reasons. One of those reasons is dissatisfaction. On international flights, like all other flights, you will find that your actions are limited in the air. There are only certain times when you can remove your seatbelts, use the bathroom, or use your electronic equipment. If these times do not meet with your schedule, you are advised to just deal with it. Becoming upset or hysterical will not accomplish anything for you; expect for maybe a date with local authorities at your next stop.

One of the number one reasons why trouble begins on a plane, even if is innocent enough as being scared to fly, is because travelers do not know the consequences of their actions. A nervous, jittery, or confrontational passenger is what flight attendants are taught to look for. Although you may not be a terrorist, you may be displaying noticeable symptoms. In the event that this does happen, your plane will likely be rerouted, where you and other passengers will be met with airfield security or local authorities. Depending on what your actions involved, you may be charged with disorderly conduct or something similar. Essentially, this means that it is extremely important that you remain calm at all times.

In addition to remaining calm aboard an international flight, it is also advised that you remain calm at the airport. All international airports are on high alert. This means that they will not only be looking for prohibited items, but suspicious travelers as well. If you are nervous about flying, you need to think of something enjoyable; it may help to calm your nerves. If you are asked to do something by airfield security, such as step aside, you are advised to do so. If you do not, it is likely that a confrontation could brew. Starting a confrontation in airfield is just as serious as starting one in the air. In fact, you will likely be met with the same consequences, as mentioned above.

Although it is important to know what could happen to you if you fail to remain clam in an international airport or aboard an international flight, is it is also important to work on ways to stay calm. Whether it involves thinking happy thoughts, bringing along headphones, or by taking long deep breaths, it is advised that you develop multiple ways to keep yourself calm and level headed.

Corporate Jet Charter

By Jackie Lee

Are you planning a business trip or a corporate event? If your destination is located more than two or three hours away from your residence, you may be looking to fly. After all, air travel is a relatively safe, easy, and convenient way to get to your destination. When it comes to air travel, many travelers automatically think of commercial airlines, but did you know that you also have another option? That option involves a corporate jet charter.

If your company does not have a corporate jet, and you find yourself flying commercial a lot you might want to make a case for a corporate jet charter. A case can be made for the economic feasibility of such a decision. There are, of course, pros and cons, all of which need to be researched before a final decision is made.

If your company is still flying you commercial you might want to do some research. Although the basic commercial airline ticket may be cheaper, you need to look at the fees you incur for flying first class or business, as well as on short notice. You may fly during the week which can also increase your fares. Of course the additional fees for baggage, and shortly going to the bathroom add up fast. You may find a corporate jet charter ends up being almost the same price, especially when you factor in the ease of use, time saved, and being able to get work done while traveling.

Privacy is one thing you don't get on a commercial flight. An executive or upper management position commands a high salary. Why would you waste hours of the time you are paying for to get nothing done on a commercial jet. With a corporate jet charter you can spend the entire flight working, or in a meeting. It is private, and no one will interfere with the work getting done. If you have a long journey much work can be accomplished while in the air.

In addition to the cost, a large number of businesses choose to book reservations for a commercial airline because it is something that they are familiar with; it is something that is easy to do. Whether you are traveling domestically or internationally, there is a good chance that you would be familiar with the commercial airlines that you could do business with. This comfort factor is what prompts many to fly commercially. Knowing the general background of a commercial airline, like Delta Airlines or United Airlines, is very comforting to many travelers; it tends to offer them security and peace of mind. When it comes to the chartering of a private jet, most jet chartering companies are relatively small and sometimes even unheard of.

You may not know of a corporate jet charter service off the top of your head. Don't worry, I bet there is someone you know who does. Asking around other business contacts will let you know who has first hand knowledge of how to charter a corporate jet. They will be able to send you in the right direction, and let you know the pros and cons of companies in your area. A personal recommendation should make the process a little more comfortable.

Booking a corporate jet charter is a big decision, and one only you and your company can make. Just remember, when you are making this decision to factor in all of the variables involved in air travel. This includes the price of the ticket, but also the other features and benefits you gain by flying privately. These features may tip the scale and make it quite worth the expense.

Winter Escape on Your Sailboat

By Capt. Douglas Malat

Once a year I turn into a bird and take my sailboat south for the winter. You can head down as far as the Keys in Florida, hang out in Key West, but for most sailors it's tough getting the time. I have found you can pop down easily to the Chesapeake in the Virginia/Maryland area and winter there. The sailing is great into December and I hear the waters don't freeze up like the Northeast, so you can keep sailing well after. You can find a new cove on every sail and explore to your hearts content. You have the Norfolk International Airport close by for your convenience. I also found N. Carolina inviting. It stays very nice thru the winter because the warm Gulfstream is just Offshore. There are numerous Marinas to stay at, from Dowry Creek in Belhaven to Oriental and Beaufort (Bow-Fort) where they found Black Beards' ship by the inlet. A museum is set up in Beaufort town with interesting artifacts & stories. In all these areas slip rates run about 7-8 dollars a foot per month. You can find cheaper and of course more expensive. So for a 40' boat you're talking around $280.00 a month/6 months $1680.00 and sail her back up north in the spring. What a bargain! Plus you get to go Sailing all winter! There are plenty of slips available, and with the Internet, it makes it even easier. It is easy to head down also. It is not traumatic, and once you do this, you'll be hooked.

From Montauk to the Chesapeake it would be about 54 hours (2-2 1/2 days). You can sail to Cape May Harbor first and anchor by the Coast Guard Station. That would be a 30 hour runNot too bad, right! Now you have an option. You can head Offshore to the Chesapeake taking about another 24 hours, or head up the Delaware Bay to the C & D canal, about 8-10 hours with the tide helping you. Stay at a marina on the C & D overnight & continue into the Northern Chesapeake the next day. Norfolk, VA., with the beginning of the ICW, is south. That would be longer, but more Inland. Taking Long Island Sound west to the East River and south to Cape May is also fine. I find heading Offshore takes some uncertainty out, by not having the Inland obstructions, tide changes, buoys, etc to worry about. Offshore you're just clicking the miles off and getting into your watch routines. There is an added bonus on your winter run off, to head south. You usually start off in October or November where your winds are generally coming out of the Northwest. This means the wind is coming off the land, giving you flatter seas & plenty of rip-roaring speed. With a rumbline to the Chesapeake, that would be a beam reach all the way down. Even with that Cape May stop over, the next day would have the wind aft of the beam.

Little Creek is a great protected harbor, just a few miles in to the south when entering the mouth of the Chesapeake. There are numerous Marinas, such as "Little Creek Marina", "Cobbs", & "Cutty Sarks" with slips at great daily, weekly, or monthly rates. Haul out for your bottom paint job at great pricesor you can do it yourself. The Airport is minutes away. Norfolk is not that far north, where the ICW starts. Everyone is so nice & helpful.well, it's Southern hospitality! Tidewater Marina in Norfolk has all the amenities.dock up or anchor just outside the marina, there's plenty of room! It is a hard decision to make when you think of exploring the Chesapeake or exploring the ICW on the way to N. Carolinaboth have wonderful little towns and coves. You will make boating buddies in these areas as the parade of boats from the North head South during this time. They have business like cards with their boats' Name, E-mail address & Phone numbers, so staying in touch with new found friends is easy.

I usually head south in October, keeping an eye on the weather. Hurricane Season is not over yet, so watching the Eastern Caribbean for new formations are prudent. Hurricanes forming in that area do not get to the Northeast in a couple of days, it sometimes takes weeks. So you have plenty of time to do your run to a good harbor in case of one. These two websites are great to assit you in your trip. The first is a global look at the weather by satellite: (http://www.goes.noaa.gov/g8hu.html). The other is a Wind/Wave site, showing Speeds, direction, heights, etc, giving you a weather window up to 96 hrs: (http://weather.noaa.gov/fax/marsh.shtml#wind). Very cool sites to explore..Never rely on 1 or 2 sources of information, always have an over abundance. Your VHF radio also tells you of any Formations or Disturbances in the Atlantic & Caribbean.

There's so much to explore, whether your trip is just for a long weekend or over the winter. But, who says you have to go home for the summer. Another adventure always lies ahead.
